Over 150,000 people toured the Antarctica exhibition during its three-month run which concludes on January 10th, 2007. A highlight of the event was a fundraising dinner held by the Sand Dollar Guild which serves as a fundraising arm of the Ocean Institute. Over 300 people attended the event which was held on December 4, 2006.

"Interest in the polar regions remains high due to increasing news reports of the impact global warming is having on the environment at the poles. I'm very grateful to the Ocean Institute for the opportunity to exhibit my work and for the continuing emphasis they place on educating the nations youth about the threats to the worlds oceans." says Wassmann whose work next goes to New York for the International Art Expo.

The Ocean Institute has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs.   More than 78,000 K-12 students and 6,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute's 61 award-winning, immersion style programs.

To learn oceanography and science, students voyage onto the ocean to feel and taste the salty sea spray, sort through live specimens, observe migrating whales and collect scientific data. To learn maritime history and literature, students spend an entire night aboard the brig Pilgrim - each student hauling lines, hoisting sails, standing night watch and swabbing decks.

All Ocean Institute programs are designed to maximize immersion, inspire deep commitment to learning and spark curiosity, questions and future discovery.   The programs have received the inaugural Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education from the National Maritime Historical Society and the Sea Education Program of the Year from the American Sail Training Association.

The Ocean Institute was established as the Orange County Marine Institute by a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) adopted on July 12, 1977.   The JPA included the County of Orange, the Orange County Department of Education, Saddleback Community College District, Rancho Santiago Community College District, North Orange County Community College District and Coast Community College District.   The agreement was redrafted to include the City of Dana Point as a member entity in 1992.
